Currently there are 195 states in the world u which came first, the nation or the state in many cases, nations come first. Political institutions u political institution: an established and durable pattern of authority. Political institutions are the working structures of gov"t, such as legislatures and executive departments u authority respect for political leaders is fluid & requires continual maintenance. Over time, people continue to look to political institutions to solve problems, decide controversies, and set directions for the future. Institutions are made up of many people usually over an extended period of time bigger than one: creates strength outside of just an individual, creates stability. 1) effective states : control & tax entire territory, laws are mostly obeyed, gov"t looks after general welfare & security o corruption is fairly minor. Ex: much of africa, asia, and latin america. Effective, weak, failed states u not all states are effective, some are more so than others three main categories.
