BIOL 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Ginkgo, Plant, Desiccation
Document Summary
Ectomycorrhizae relationships- fungus aids plant in obtaining nutrients and plant feeds fungus. Lichens- mutualistic association between a fungus and a green alga or a cyanobacterium or both -most all of fungal species are ascomycetes. Ecological roles- (cid:862)pioneer spe(cid:272)ies(cid:863) (cid:272)an esta(cid:271)lish itself and (cid:271)e the first to grow in (cid:271)urned forests, retreating glaciers, and lava flows. Some are sensitive to air pollution and are used as air quality indicators. Most grow slowly and some are thought to be quite old (100s or 1000s years) habitats- survive in a wide range of habitats>rocks, soil, tree bark, can even grow on human made materials like concrete, plastic and metal. Sexual reproduction- fungal partner can reproduce sexually forming either ascocarps or basidiocarps. Dutch elm disease cause by ascomycete ophiostoma ulmi, native to asia, vectored by two beetle species. Economic uses- yeast in making bread, fermentation of beer and wine, edible ascocarps, decomposers of diapers, mycoremediation> using fungi to remove or degrade dangerous chemicals.
