Comst 214: professional communication: verbal and non verbal communication. Intentionality: words are intentional communication: words are consciously and strategically selected. Its more difficult to control our nonverbals: words (and their associated meanings) influence outcomes. It is generally assumed that we can choose the words that we say. Effectiveness: communicate to avoid misunderstandings: avoid equivocal terms, use low level abstractions (i. e. , concrete language) in most contexts, consider the appropriateness of slang/jargon. Jargon in particular can have some benefits (e. g. more efficient, can show expertise, can appear more credible, etc. : use ambiguity strategically. If a message is ambiguous, the receiver is especially likely to clarify it for herself in a way which corresponds to her expectations. What are reasons why you would want to be more ambiguous: 1. I just need a little more time to finish the job: your job performance hasn"t been good this year.
