PSYCH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Substantia Nigra, Phineas Gage, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
What are the 3 primary regions of the brain: forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain. Often called the little brain, the cerebellum is critical to the coordination of movement and to our sense of equilibrium. It is also involved in forming motor memories and conditioned responses. One of the first structures influenced by alcohol. The medulla controls largely unconscious, vital functions such as blood circulation, breathing, and regulating reflexes such as sneezing, coughing, and salivating. Large doses of morphine and other drugs can be fatal. The pons is a bridge of fibers that connects the brainstem with the cerebellum. The tectum, superior colliculus, and inferior colliculus are structures of the midbrain involved in routing important sensory information. The substantia nigra is a dopamine-containing pathway that deteriorates in parkinson"s disease. The limbic system is a network of structures involved in the regulation of emotion, memory, and motivation. It includes the thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala.
