James studied memory, emotion, willpower, habits, as well as parapsychology and spiritualism. Define functionalism : emphasized the function and purpose of behavior (how and why, rather than what. ) Mary whiton calkins completed her doctoral work under james, but was denied the degree by harvard. She later became the first female president of the american psychological association. Went to some lectures at harvard, when she was in class, all men left, first woman with a phd, because they didn"t admit women.
