Preference method : two objects are presented simultaneously and we record how long they look at each object. Habituation method : a stimulus becomes so familiar or boring that infant stops showing any response to it. Evoked potentials : present stimulus and record brain waves. Infants aged 2 months or older can discriminate patterns. From 0-2 months, they can only discriminate moderately similar to adults - including highly complex ones complex patterns. Curvilinear rather than linear (straight lines) complex. They prefer normal drawings of faces over scrambled. Babies fixate on internal parts of the face instead of ones just the edges. Can tell the difference between happy and sad faces. Show happiness towards happy faces and distress towards sad faces.
