Wetherill had beaten many archeologists to certain sites/ruins. Widely know as being a looter, some arch"s have little respect for him, however they fail to see that despite these shortcomings he played a major role in south-west arch. Nm, az, sw co, se utah, w tx, sonora & chihuahua. Descendants of ancient peoples still live there- interaction is good and bad. Good preservation, most of region desert (dry conditions good) 3 major cultural traditions: ancestral pueblo (anasazi, hohokam, mogollon (mountains) Dry, high uplifted desert region, rivers cut through uplifted ground. Dry immense empty desert, cant grow beans/squash without irrigation (not enough rain) Lived in mountains from south of arizona to mexico. Father was unsuccessful entrepreneur, ended up in mesa verde. 1888 found cliff palace- dug in every major cliff mv dwelling, largest cliff dwelling in southwest. Techniques crude, excavated with shovels/picks (often broke things) didn"t make correct observations, sold collections (disrespectful technique)
