Proceeds any data recovery: survey or excavation. Research design= a plan for doing research. Ex of carter"s search for king tut"s tomb. We cannot dig every site or all portions of all sites. We cannot collect all the data when we dig. Sites do not contain all of past material culture. Population: the whole set of materials you wish to study. Sample unit: each member of the populationtime & space: dating: 2 types. Chronometric or absolute dating dates events to a modern calendar. Relative dating dates events relative to each other (that is: earlier & later) Time & space: relative dating: form of stylistic seriation. Frequency seriation: james deetz, colonial, gravestones- door into afterlife, headboard(of bed), number of humps = number of bodies. Judgmental: based on judgment or prior knowledge. Systematic: uses a patterned method for choosing sample units. Random (probability): each unit has an equal chance of being in the sample.
