The scale on the map is the ratio between the measurement of something on the map and the corresponding measurement on the earth. Large scale map - towns / parts of cities. Their main purpose is to display one or more natural / cultural features on an area or of the world as a whole. Quadrangle map is one that covers 7. 5 minutes of longitude and of latitude and provide detailed information about the natural and cultural features of an area. Topographic maps depict the surface of the earth. Cartographers must therefore use a variety of techniques to translate 3d surfaces to 2d maps. Contour lines are used to show elevation on topographic maps. Contour interval is the vertical spacing between contour lines, and is normally stated on the map. The more irregular the surface, the more contour lines need to be drawn; the steeper the slope, the closer together these contour lines rendering that slope would be.
