GEOG 3 Lecture 27: Geog 3 - World Regional Geography - 27
Document Summary
Four main temperature-altitude zones, are commonly recognized in the region. As altitude increases, the temperature of the air decreases by about 1 degree f per 300 feet of elevation. Thus temperatures are highest in the lowlands, which are known in spanish as the tierra caliente, or hot land: The tierra caliente extends up to about 3000 feet and in some parts of the region these lowlands cover large areas. Many coastal areas of the tierra caliente, such as northeastern brazil, have become zones of plantation agriculture that support populations of considerable size. Between 3000 and 6500 feet is the cooler tierra templada (temperate land). The year round, spring like climate of this zone drew large numbers of indigenous people in the distant past and, more recently, has drawn europeans. Between 6500 and 12,000 feet, is the tierra fria (cool land). Above 12,000 feet, is the tierra helada (frozone land).
