Document Summary

Seismic waves: there are types of seismic waves, body waves: travel through earth"s interior, surface waves: travel along earth"s surface, there are two types of body waves, p-waves (primary waves) Travel at speeds of 9000 to 15000 mph. A little slower, travels at speeds of 4500 10000 mph. Shearing wave (similar to a wave in the ocean) Surface waves: caused by p-waves hitting earth"s surface from below, 2 types of surface waves, 1. Up and down motion: travel together, usually one is more noticeable than the other, most destructive earthquake waves. Measuring earthquakes: earthquakes are measured using seismographs. How seismographs work: the seismograph records the earthquake waves as well as the time at which the waves arrive. What do you usually want to know after an earthquake: where was the earthquake, there are usually 3 steps of figuring this out.
