Document Summary

All we know about socrates is from word of mouth from his students and plato. Didn"t like writing because text didn"t talk back , as in you can"t hold a debate or conversation with text. Other criticisms of writing include :don"t have to remember anything, makes people lazy. In the early dialogues we find a more accurate depiction of the historical socrates. Socrates was famous for claiming to know nothing. This dialogue does not put forward a view. These dialogues do not involve coming to any positive conclusions about the question at issue. The euthyphro is an example of an early dialogue. In the later dialogues, socrates becomes more of a mouthpiece for plato"s own views. Plato defends the idea that piety, virtue, justice, exist. They are forms that exist apart from pious, virtuous, actions. When socrates talks about forms , he means definitions. He does not claim that x exists, nor does he claim to know what x is.
