SOC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Syphilis, Ethnography, Hawthorne Effect
Document Summary
Research design is your detailed plan for collecting data scientifically. Often this is influenced by time and money (ex. Quantitative research is when data is collected in numerical form. It can get larger numbers of respondents, but less depth. Qualitative research relies more on field or naturalistic settings. Questions tend to be opened ended; observation is largely used for data collection. Surveys tell socialists how people think and act. Questionnaires are either mailed out or are given in person ( can you complete a short survey? ) More anonymous - good when asking about sensitive stuff! People can throw them away or reject requests. Interviews can be done in person or over the phone. High response rate because people won"t turn down a person asking for help. Bias based on age, race, or gender of interviewer. Observation - you collect data through direct participation and/or observation of a group. An ethnography describes an entire social setting through extended observation.
