Soci 13000 youth and youth cultures lecture notes. A creation of a new stage of life. 12th century youths- worked, married, had kids as young as 14. By 1790 working in agriculture, learning on the job. Youth now spend more time in educational institutions. All young people are separated from adults for most of the day. Now divided classes by age, grouping by age, ex. All 1st graders are usually 6-7 years" old. Today youth is a financial burden on their family. Led to the emergence of youth and adolescence. 1880 compulsory schooling laws began by 1920 all schools had compulsory school laws. Mass immigration from southern and eastern europe at this time. Unionization- organizing workers to get better wages and working conditions. Urbanization- moving from farms to factories for jobs. Cultural changes: childhood came to be seen as a special time of life. Saw children as savage, uncivilized, unsocialized and dangerous.
