Document Summary

Chapter 6 and 17 notes- thermochemistry and thermodynamics. Section 1- the nature of energy: main trends in nature: Order disorder (ex. neat pile of leaves being scattered) High/concentrated energy low energy (burning match being extinguished: can force things to go opposite way, but at cost of something (usually if not always energy, energy- capacity to do work or produce heat. Heat- transfer of energy between 2 objects due to a temperature difference; amount of heat is amount of energy transferred. Temperature- amount of motion in a system; average kinetic energy; effect of heat. Law of conservation of energy- energy can be converted form one form to another but can be neither created nor destroyed. Converting energy into different forms is key to having enough useful energy to make something happen. Allows us to calculate whether things will react. Potential energy- energy due to position or composition; has potential to do something.
