PHIL-P 145 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Utopia, Epicurus, Teleological Argument
Document Summary
Can god create a stone that he cannot lift? (either way he is not all powerful) Can god do an immoral thing (if not he is not all powerful, if so he is not perfect) Argument from divine hiddenness (lack of evidence) Aristotle is a founding father of the virtue of ethics. These are virtues of ethics through observing someone"s disposition. A contrasting approach is just observing their individual actions. One can then demonstrate what"s right and wrong by witnessing the rewards and consequences these actions prompt. Something is of instrumental value is when it brings upon something nice. For example no one likes money for the mere fact that its money, it is liked because of its use. Something is of intrinsic value when you like it simply for being itself. Family, all these things make us happy because of their presence not because of what they bring about.
