Aniticipatory stage: before food reaches the mouth, sensory information helps person prepare for food, visual information, olfactory information, allow person to discriminate desirable and undesirable things to eat, avoid potential harm. Oral stage: part 2: transport, tongue pushes the bolus up against palate and moves it posteriorly toward the pharynx, size and consistency of bolus dictate lingual strength needed, oral phase is over when bolus passes anterior faucial pillars. Esophageal stage: begins when larynx lowers backward, breathing can be resumed, upper esophageal sphincter contracts, occurs simultaneously as the larynx lowers backwards, bolus moves through esophagus in peristaltic waves, synchronized smooth muscle contractions.
