Management vs. Leadership:
• Never forget: we manage thing, but we lead people
• Management: the responsibility for and control of assets
• Leadership: getting other people to willingly do the things you want them to do
Definitions and Leadership Types:
• Autocratic – dictatorial leadership, stand around and orders people to do things
• Democratic – leaders ask others their opinions and recommendations, then decide how they’re
going to proceed – gives opportunity to give thoughts because future good will (almost opposite
of autocratic)
• Laissez-Faire: “hands-off”, develop/ empower employees to make decisions when you’re not
around, well trained to handle situations, not checking with manager for everything (within
limits of authority)
• Bureaucratic: bureaucracy: paperwork – rules, policies, and procedures to be followed –
contingency plan for everything – standard procedure for everything/ situation – employees do
less thinking and look up what to do. *consistency*
• Use different leadership styles in different situations – leadership type always depends
