During the high renaissance in italy, artists began to be viewed as geniuses rather than craftspersons. Their artwork was more personally expressive than earlier renaissance artists. Some of the most well-known artists in world history worked at this time, including leonardo da vinci, michelangelo and raphael. Leonardo is the perfect example of what we call a renaissance man. he was an accomplished visual artist, and was also active in engineering, military science, anatomy, botany, architecture, aerodynamics, optics and more. He left 10,000 pages of drawings, ideas, sketches, and notes. He received art training in milan under the older artist verrocchio. These figures are joined together in a triangular configuration. The strong contrast of dark and light values which reveal the form of the figures is called chiaroscuro. The figures emerge from the semi-darkness; the picture has a dreamlike, mysterious quality.
