Document Summary

Ch 7. 1- learning about the world through surveys. Population- group of objects of people to study (usually large, but can be smaller) Ex. all students at medina high school. Statistic- numerical description of a sample (estimators) Census- a count/measurement of an entire population. Statistical inference- drawing conclusions about a population by observing only a small subset of the population. Sample standard deviation = s population standard deviation = . Sampling bias- taking a sample that is not representative of a situation. Measurement bias- asking questions that do not produce a true answer. When reading about a survey : know what percentage of people who were asked to participate actually did, know if the researchers chose the people to participate, or accepted volunteers. Simple random sample (srs)- draw objects from population at random and without replacement (sampling with little bias) Staticians evaluate the method used for a survey, not the outcome of a single survey.
