Chapter 2 - drug use as a social problem. Two main categories of problems associated with drug use. Risk of overdose: risk of developing dependence / overdose / chronic health problems. The drug is rarely the problem, the behaviors that a user has is what is dangerous. Problems related to drug use as a _deviant_ behavior: arrests, fines, jailing, expenses associated with prevention and treatment. Like most countries, the u. s. had virtually no laws regulating drugs in the 1800s. Three main concerns aroused public interest and led to regulation of drugs: Tobacco, it is an addiction that is expensive. Factories put different levels of tobacco and nicotine in each pack, some smaller and some larger. People sell different drugs than what they say they are to make more money. Example of acute (short-term) physiological toxicity (prescription pain killer) _ prescription painkiller overdose, stops breathing _
