Document Summary

Biol 150 principles of molecular & cellular biology. Epithelial cells link together to form sheets of cells that separate the body from the environment, and different types of cells from one another. These cells have distinctive surfaces, with the apical surface that performs specialized tasks specific for that tissue separated from the more uniform basal surface that faces the body and bloodstream. Some epithelia such as the retina have narrow tall cells closely packed together, while other epithelia like skin cells have very wide but flat cells. All epithelial cells must form very firm and impermeable junctions; otherwise body contents such as stomach acid could leak through the epithelium. Desmosomes form at spots where epithelial cells are physically linked to another cell, and can appear anywhere where cells are next to each other. Desmosomes between cells are connected to each other by the protein cadherin in the presence of calcium.
