Data vs. information: data: representation of a fact, figure, or idea. Each 0 or 1 is a binary digit, or bit for short: bit, byte. 8 bits: each letter, number, and character is a string of eight 0s and 1s. File size/storage space measurement: 1kb =1,000 bytes; 1mb=1,000kb, 1gb=1,000 mb; 1tb= 1,000 gb. Computer hardware: hardware: any part of the computer you can touch. Types of computers: mainframe: supports hundreds of users simultaneously, supercomputer: performs complex calculations rapidly, personal computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, etc, embedded: self-contained computer performing dedicated functions. Input devices: devices used to enter information or instructions into the computer. Output devices: send processed data out of the computer.
