Recent changes in family decision making: related to who did the work outside the home. If both people contributed to outside work, decisions were more likely to be made by both: this links market work with family work. In mid twentieth century, few wives worked outside home: only one paid worker the man. Rates of employed women rose sharp through the 1990s and leveled off around 2000. 2007-77% of all married with school-aged children were in the labor force. 64% of those with preschool-aged children were in the labor force. Post 1950s: increase in # of working women. Service sector: workers doing personal services like education, health care, communication, food industry, entertainment, etc. Populations shifted from rural areas to cities and each generation had fewer children: parents preferred strategy to have less children and invest more resources in each of those children.
