A S L 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Ethnic Enclave, Social Capital, Main Source
Document Summary
Throughout advanced industrial societies, the last two decades have witnessed a significant increase in self-employment and small business activity among ethnic minorities. In this chapter, key aspects of ethnic minority business activity in britain are assessed. One important pattern that needs noting before this global review is the sharp contrast between high levels of ethnic minority enterprises in the anglo-american realm and comparatively low levels throughout most of mainland europe. This is largely due to structural factors with the laissez-faire deregulated commercial environments of the ui< and usa offering a far more liberal opportunity structure than the much snore restrictive mainland european countries. In france, high levels of business activity among individuals of moroccan, tunisian and chinese origin have been noted. These enterprises tend to offer the same products as indigenously owned firms, but provide a different quality of service.
