ACCTG 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Politeness Theory, Endangerment, Formal Language
Document Summary
Formal language is important to ensure that the intended meaning of a message is understood by its receivers. One form can have more than one function, e. g. : seeking information, getting what you want, passing on information about how you feel, . The distinction between forma and functions is central to the concept of speech act, which was introduced by j. l. Illocution, which is the social act that the speaker performs with utterance (e. g. a request). The second element is the locution, which is the way the utterance is expressed in words and phrases (e. g. could you call the customer please). There are indirect speech acts = cases where one speech act is performed through another. Includes ideas and concept, relates to the future. Every utterance or text that extends its audience s knowledge about any of the spheres serves an informational function.
