Document Summary

Traits/dispositions as enduring attributes that are characteristic of a person. Fundamental questions: how do we conceptualise traits, what is a trait, precise formulations, how can we identify which traits are the most important, how do people differ, how can we formulate a comprehensive taxonomy, containing all major traits. Traits: view: traits cause behaviour, traits can be measured based on expressions other than direct behavioural ones. Internal traits, enduring over situations: this is because sometimes traits are dormant, so we cannot observe them outwardly -> capacities remain, even when behaviours are not expressed, viewing traits as causes can rule out other causes of behaviour. Key elements/ steps of the research program: act nomination. Identifying which acts are most important for a particular trait/ prototypical acts: recording of act performance, securing information on individuals, self-reports, reports from people close to the individual.
