ACCTG 1 Lecture Notes - Safran, Therapeutic Relationship, Web Accessibility Initiative
Document Summary
Internal images of the therapist: trusting relationship, acceptance of good and bad sides of therapist, relationship at termination realistic and honest. The two most helpful imageries for clients perceived as warm. Symbiotic mother imagery: wholly good view of therapist. Insufficient mother imagery: therapist is not understanding enough of client"s needs, this imagery often results in termination of therapy. Unattainable father imagery: some women regard their male therapists as the partner they always wanted, progression of therapy leads to disappointment and anger. Stern demanding father imagery: affection of therapist is difficult to obtain (or perceived to be so) Devalued object imagery: client doesn"t feel accepted. Repressed object imagery: client cannot create fully formed image of therapist. Unreachable, ideal object imagery: therapist is seen to be god-like, on a pedestal and far from reach. Container with clear boundaries which can hold strong emotions that clients produce produces safe space in which clients can actively express themselves.
