The uniting of europe: from discord to concord. In the first, germany conquered almost the entire continent. In the second, two essentially extraneous forces - the usa and the ussr - defeated. The us and ussr both fought against germany, however they didn"t work together, there were no joint operations or agreements, and after the war they just occupied the same territory. There was a strong economic link between these european countries and their overseas territories, so when they lost the connection their economy was further upset. Europe could not deny the colonies their independence, not after what they experienced: They didn"t have the moral authority to do so or the political. After wwi and before wwii many new nation-states were created, and nationalism and liberalism were seen as two new dynamic forces replacing monarchies etc. Many of these nation states were granted legitimacy, and often they adopted means to hold the colonies back.
