Around the earth (static) circled the wandering starts (mercury, venus, Beyond saturn was the turning sphere of the fixed stars, the stars that stayed stationary relative to one another. 2 distinct regions were discerned: sub-lunar region = from the earth up to the moon, super-lunar region = from the moon to the end of the universe. Nothing existed outside the universe, not even space. The catholic church accepted this because it fit into their paradigm that the world got created by god around mankind. Five elements of the aristotelian universe: everything in the super-lunar region was made of an element called aether.
