DANCEST 805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Traumatic Brain Injury, Brain Simulation, Brainstem
Document Summary
Dualism: mind brain (are physically distinct) Location of the brain activity when shown certain images. Each type of content has an associated pattern of brain activity. Consciousness arises as a function of which brain circuits are active. Different areas deal with different types of information, but all areas together form our consciousness. In this state, they have sleep/wake cycles they open their eyes and appear to be awake, close their eyes and appear to be asleep but they do not seem to respond to their surroundings. Brain imaging may be used to identify those who are conscious, but unable to respond a minimally conscious state. The longer the patient has uws the less likely they are to become conscious again. (still activity in the brain stem, but damage to the cortical regions know for consciousness. No brain activity in any region of the brain. When the brain is dead, the person is dead.
