Document Summary

Task 9 conflicts of interest: relational self-construal and decision. Zero-sum perceptions: involve either-or strategy of conflict resolution if one person benefits, other must make sacrifice. Classical theories of rational choice: depict humans as both primarily driven by self-interest motives and optimally making choices on basis of self-interest. Yet many individuals sacrifice own interest for sake of important relationship. Interdependence theory: transformation of motivations in such transformations people depart from self-interested goals to make choices that are prosocial or promote well-being of relationship partners. Using this theory researchers examined predictors of willingness to sacrifice and the consequences of self-sacrifice in close relationships. Actions may reflect alternative to zero-sum thinking individuals focus on long-term benefits of sacrificing self-interest. Little research on types of individuals who are more inclined to engage in transformation of motivation aim of research: to examine this question in two studies (relational self- construal in perceptions of conflicting interest within close relationships)
