A psychological disorder is a syndrome marked by dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that are maladaptive. Perspectives on psychological disorders (not in book, only know what is on slides) Psychodynamic: psychological disorders are caused by unconscious conflicts, desires and impulses. Behavioral: psychological disorders can result from classical and operant conditioning. Cognitive: psychological disorders can result from negative, self-defeating thinking. Systems: people are part of larger systems (e. g. , couple, family, etc. ) and psychological disorders can be caused by problems within these systems. Medical-biological: these models explain psychological disorders in terms of medical explanations. They focus on disturbances in the anatomy and chemistry of the brain. Biopsychosocial: biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors interact to produce specific psychological disorders. (figure 15. 1,p. 612: diathesis-stress model (a version of the biopsychosocial model) A person"s inherited characteristics, biological processes and early learning experiences can create a predisposition (diathesis) for a psychological disorder. Whether the disorder appears depends on the stressors the person encounters.
