Two primary bases for minority status in us. Ethnicity: sense of peoplehood : members have cultural similarities, different from other groups. May be viewed by members and outsiders as religious, racial, linguistic, and/or geographic. In us, tolerance loosens ethnic bonds (ex: scottish, norwegians, etc. ) Rejection or subordination strengthens ethnic bonds (ex: irish in 18-1900s, africans, etc. ) Ethnocentrism: belief that one"s own group is unique and right: consider themselves right, others wrong . Racism: intolerance of people perceived to be inherently or genetically inferior: wrongly ties culture and race, no scientific basis. Nazi lebensborn: genetically pure and superior race : children of racially pure ss officers and women, kids now in their 70s, remarkably average, no different to other people their age. There are scientifically proven generalizations us examples (explained by social conditions: whites on average earn more than blacks, blacks on average are less educated than whites.
