Art history- academic discipline concerned with the historical contexts of works of art. Aesthetics- sub-discipline of philosophy concerned with the nature of how we process and asses that we perceive; originally, tried to define the nature of beauty. Drawings allow artists to collect and record ideas (sketchbooks), to try proportions and to visualize ideas (preparatory drawings); sometimes, however can be an end in themselves. Italian disegno means design, relates to the design of drawings. Means: indicate direction/ motion: tonal variations/ shading, hatching/ cross-hatching. Ew: a man tricked by gypsies, leonardo davinci, 1493, pen and ink. Types of paint- oil, fresco, tempera, encaustic (hot wax), acrylics. All paints consist of 3 things: pigment, binder, thinner. Used since ancient times (ancient egyptian mummy portraits) Ew: mummy portrait of a man, egypt, 160-170 ad, encaustic painting on wood. Fresco painting (buon fresco)- powdered pigment, binder= lime in plaster, thinner= water true fresco must be painted on wet, fresh plaster think of wall art.
