Document Summary

Matter consists of chemical elements in pure form and in combinations called compounds. Element- certain kind of element that is dif from those in other elements. Cannot be broken down to other substance through chemical reactions. Atom- smallest unit of an element that retains properties of an element. Know: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, cloride, magnesium. Molecule- 2 or more elements held together by a covalent bond. Compound- consists of 2 or more elements combined in a fixed ratio. Isotope- elements with different number of nuetrons but same protons. Ionic bonds- one atom takes electrons from another, attractions between anion and cations, often called salts, which may form crystals, atractiond between ions of opposite charges. Ions- charged atoms, same number of protons but different electrical charges. Essential elements make up 96% of matter in life. An atoms electrons vary in the amount of energy they possess. Energy is defined as the capacity to cause change.
