First learn words for concrete objects (mama, ball, bottle) Then more abstract ideas (love, truth, justice) At 2 years old, we demonstrate understanding of the relationships between words by using 2-word sentences (dog runs, tommy hit) Identify that some symbols stand for things (nouns) and others stand for action (verbs) Verbal communication spoken language (talking to someone else, either face-to-face or on the phone)
