Document Summary

Definition of sensations: sensation the conscious or subconscious awareness of changes in the external/ internal conditions of the body, for a sensation to occur, four conditions must be satisfied: Somatic senses sensations from body walls ; tactile, thermal, pain, and proprioceptive sensations. Visceral senses provide info about conditions within internal organs like pressure, stretch, chemicals, nausea, hunger, and temperature. Types of sensory receptors: grouped in 3 ways: Structures of their sensory receptors free nerve endings that are encapsulated in connective tissue; microscopically defined. Separate cells that synapse with sensory neurons. Location of the receptors & the origin of the stimuli. Exteroceptors near surface of body, get external stimulation (sunlight, pressure, taste, vibration) Interoceptors monitor internal environment; located in blood vessels, visceral organs, & muscles; not consciously received. Proprioceptors muscles, tendons, joints, internal ear: sensitivity decreases the deeper it goes. Somatic sensations: somatic sensations arise from the stimulation of sensory receptors embedded in: Mucous membranes of the mouth, vagina, & anus.
