PSYC 4070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Breastfeeding, Scientific Method, Pacifier
Document Summary
Started scientifically studying development about 150 years ago. People started thinking how well can an infant see/hear. Adult can be tested with eye chart or ear test. Scientific method is self-corrective (you will realize you made a mistake: habituation method: most primitive form of learning. Attached pacifier to motion sensor which makes graph. When sound was played, baby slowed down or stopped suckling. When sound was constant, baby began suckling again- habituation. Baby can hear difference between 2 different sounds. Turn noise up until baby stopped suckling. When the baby notices the letter and stops suckling that is there best ability to see. Takes several months for a baby to learn to voluntarily suckle- younger than that you can use an ekg. Their heart slows down when they see something interesting- opposite of adult b/c babies hearts are extremely fast resting level. Faces give you the most information about humans.
