SOCL 2001 Lecture : Lecture 3
Document Summary
9/4: four fundamental sociological theories, functionalism and conflict theory are primarily about the big picture. Macro level: symbolic interactionism and exchange theory is for micro level sociology. Interaction and communication: structural functionalism: similar to the ideas of august comte. Looks from two large concepts (structure and function): social structure- the make-up , gender relationships, function- the role of the certain part of the structure in changing the society. The reason for its existence: normal state: no war or no turmoil. Peaceful: pathological states- time of war, great depression. 9/11, 60s: key concepts in sociology, status (ascribed vs. achieved)-occupying a particular position in society. Ex: male, daughter, employee, student, teacher, etc: roles-expected behavior appropriate for a particular status. Our life is a drama and we play a role or roles. Connected to society through our status and roles. Ex: a teacher gives lecture, not act like a student: norms- expected rules applied to everyone.
