The 1992 election - president clinton won, breaking the chain of democrats losing. Northerners were moving south because of the weather, moving votes. Clinton was a new democrat, realigns its focus bc they hadn"t won in 3 terms and guarantee prosperity (fight poverty by improving education, more job opportunities) Clinton"s reforms - the welfare reform was limited time only. It wasn"t guaranteed for life, either; had to have job/education. Created nafta to eliminate tariff barriers to agricultural, manufacturing, and services, and to remove investment restrictions. Increased taxes, causing the national debt to go down. 1991 persian gulf war - iran & iraqi war in the 80s had wrapped up. Iraq rebuilds itself, run by dictator saddam hussein, an unstable person. Hussein has the iraqis suck out oil from kuwait. In august of 1990, hussein invades kuwait & controls of oil production. Hussein was often compared to hitler, people feared a wwiii.
