Document Summary

In some way, the author is critiquing society and suggests that if things don"t change, the future will be negatively affected. The book is usually set in the past to show this: purpose of gothic literature: to entertain and critique/warn society about its negative effects on the future. Chapter 1: consider the poe poem- it is fitting because it related to how miranda misses the countryside when she"s in the city. Miranda manipulates them when she randomly chooses a bible verse for her father to contemplate. She"s smart and uses her father"s religious inclinations to get what she wants. The verse was perfect for her situation - about abraham sending his child away to beersheba. Her mother is very understanding of her adventure side and kind of spoils her and sees miranda as a pet: she believes in god but is more relaxed about her belief than her parents. She reads bible verses every night because her father makes her.
