Aka the fertile crescent - because the area is right along and around two rivers: the. Sumer - the first state to arise in mesopotamia. Cities include: ur, uruk, lagash, and girsu (to name a few) Wagon wheel, plow, copper and bronze objects were all produced for the first time here. Developed a system of writing (this was also happening in egypt around the same time) Cuneiform writing - a type of writing that uses a stylus that"s wedge shaped at the end of it. Writing found on flood tablets (and stories on these tablets were some of the first epics ever written called flood stories ) Example: the flood tablet: epic of gilgamesh. Architecture from this time period and area (that we still have) is mostly ceremonial and they"re also massive. Gods reside at the top of the pyramid. Stands for connection between humans and the deities.
