Etruscans took over modern day italy from 700 - 509 bce. They went as far north as perugia and as far south as rome. This was going on while the archaic period. Barrel vaults - an arch, behind an arch, behind an arch, forming a tunnel. Arch - circular formation that distributes the weight of the structure evenly. Uses a keystone (the center most stone) of the arch and centering (when you use a wooden framework and then put all the bricks in) The arch lets etruscans, and later the romans, create huge, sound buildings. Groin vaults - two barrel vaults that intersect perpendicularly. All post and lintels in doric/ionic order, so this was big. Only steps are in the front of the building, not all the way around. Statues on the roof, not in the frieze. Wouldn"t have random figures, but instead would tell a story. Hollow, but still needs support near the base.
