Most important story is helping people out of egypt. Slowly developed into monotheistic (one god) belief. Only god to be worshipped; no other gods. Covenant (mutual commitment btwn god & the people) By showing loyalty, commitment, etc. , god will provide everything needed to survive. Ten commandments - guideline for how to live out covenant. Care for marginalized/outcast people (aliens, refugees, migrants, widows, orphans) Judaism was a subordinate religion; jews were a subordinate group in this period. In their own land, they were still not in charge. Have to figure out different ways of worship bc temples were not always close. Well-respected since judaism seemed like an ancient religion. Offering sacrifice at the temple is a huge part of ritual tradition. Place to come together for meals, business, sense of community, sabbath, prayer/study, etc. Leader in synagogue is the rabbi (teacher) Saying thanks for bread before meals & having one last cup of wine after.
