In their own land, they were still not in charge. Have to figure out different ways of worship bc temples were not always close. Well-respected since judaism seemed like an ancient religion. Offering sacrifice at the temple is a huge part of ritual tradition. Place to come together for meals, business, sense of community, sabbath, prayer/study, etc. Leader in synagogue is the rabbi (teacher) Saying thanks for bread before meals & having one last cup of wine after.
