Document Summary

Chapter 2: collection and presentation of data (part ii) Ideally, we would want to conduct a census in order to have complete information about our population, i. e. we get to have observations about all elements in the population. However, increasing the size of the population also causes the study to be more costly and more time-consuming. Thus, it may be impossible and it can be impractical to conduct a census. Instead of a census, we conduct a sample survey which is more economical and less time-consuming. Results from the sample survey can at times estimate those from a possible census. Also, sampling may be the only feasible method. Example: suppose a researcher is interested in getting the opinion of eligible voters on the media campaign of candidates running for top positions in the government. The total error consists of the sampling error and non-sampling error.
