Hiv/aids: human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Most infected men got hiv from having sex with other men, but infection from heterosexual transmission also occurs. Most women get hiv from heterosexual contact. Acute phase: starts around 6 days to six weeks after infection. Symptoms: fever, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, enlarged lymph nodes and generalized rash- (cid:862)flu like(cid:863) (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:271)e (cid:373)ild or asymptomatic. Very low t cell levels and/or opportunistic infections. Diseases of the immunocompromised: opportunistic infections: example fungal pneumonia, tb, cancers such as kaposi"s sar(cid:272)o(cid:373)a a(cid:374)d ly(cid:373)pho(cid:373)a, aids dementia, wasting syndrome, treatment. Combinations of drugs attack the virus at different stages. Drugs to prevent opportunistic infections: prolong life and improve health but do not eliminate virus. Mother to child during pregnancy, birth or by breastfeeding. Virus can be present in blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk: prevention. Avoid sex when you have open lesions. Detects antibodies or viral nucleic acid: know your status to prevent passing it on.
