The design of a piece of music. How a piece proceeds through time; the roadmap . Practically all music has been designed in some way. Repetition is often a feature (repetition can be ) micro or macro (large forms or small notes repeated) Forms can serve as templates or models through which new repertoire can be created. Dynamics the louds and softs of music (loud or quite) Can we have no change of dynamic in a piece of music: yes! (rock and roll music is just loud) The appropriate terminology for a repetitive rhythmic pattern is groove. The beat is not always explicitly given in a piece of music. In other words, the beat can be implicit. Beats in a piece of music are often organized into recurring cycles. Terminology (all mean: a cycle of beats): meter, metric cycle, time cycle. Conductors wave their arms around because they are visually representing the meter (showing pulses and the metric cycle)
