Document Summary

Pinning something down vs. opening something up. Open to change over time, hypothesis that hasn"t been disprove, correlations not necessarily causations. A system of ideas intended to explain something. Textbook: a way to describe, explain, and predict relationships among phenomena, using theory to make sense of our lives. Biological characteristics (chromosomes, hormones, brain specialization) account for gender differences. Example (sociobiology): differences between men and women result from genetic factors that aim to ensure survival of the fittest. Not best interpretation for this course, more than two sexes (too limiting), not enough reliance on culture, need groups and answers. Focus on interpersonal factors that influence the development of gender, social action, and socialization. Social learning theory: claims that individuals learn to be gendered by imitating others and getting responses. Being taught how to sit dresses/skits, girls playing house, putting on mom"s heels (response this would elicit based on sex of child), being taught not to play a certain way.
