Women were mostly restricted to the home in 19th century: had hardly any legal existence apart from husband, wife could not own property or earn own pay. Women sought jobs as nurses, teachers, etc. Women"s colleges opened after the civil war. Women began to attend all male institutions after 1870. Many women began to choose careers over marriage: rare, however african american women sought education as well, many chose lifelong companions with other women, unsure of whether they were sexual or not. Wctu: women"s organization (women"s christian temperance : did not agree with drinking alcohol, frances willard: most influential member, reached 150000 members paying dues, chapters all over the country. Wctu joined the push to open voting to women: owners of saloons, etc worked to make sure women"s suffrage didn"t. National women"s suffrage association vs american women"s suffrage pass. De jure segregation: under the law, separation of black and whites was necessary.
